Enhancing food security and farmers' profit through ratoon rice-potato rotation in central China

摘要: To address the growing demands for food security and sustainable land utilization, developing innovative crop rotation systems has become crucial. The ratoon rice and potatoes is important in ensuring food security. Incorporating both into a crop rotation system can effectively increase the yield per unit of arable land. A 3-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate winter crop rotation effects on yield, quality, and physiological mechanisms of subsequent ratoon rice in Central China. Comparing three patterns: ratoon rice-potato (MRP), ratoon rice-rapeseed (MRO), and ratoon rice-fallowing (MRF). Compared with MRF, MRP increased main-season rice yield by 11.13-16.63 % and ratoon-season rice yield by 12.08-19.21 %, showing advantages over MRO. Yield component analysis demonstrated that MRP enhanced effective panicles per unit area and grains per panicle. Physiological analysis revealed that MRP significantly improved net photosynthetic rate and RuBisCO activity during key growth stages, promoting dry matter accumulation and yield enhancement. The MRP treatment also improved processing and taste quality of ratoon rice. During winter rotations, MRP produced 36.96-38.43 t.ha(-1) of potatoes with superior economic returns compared to other patterns. These findings establish potato-rotation ratooning as a dual-benefit strategy that synergistically enhances grain production and farm profitability, offering a practical solution for intensive yet sustainable agriculture in subtropical ricegrowing regions.
